Hello, I'm John Russell.
大家好,我是约翰·罗素。
English has a lot of words that are both verbs and nouns.
英语有很多单词既是动词又是名词。
For example: use use
例如:使用;使用,用途。
What's the difference between the two?
这两者之间的区别是什么?
Let's listen to some examples:
让我们来听一些例子:
What is the use of this thing?
这东西的用途是什么?
How do I use this thing?
我怎么用这个东西?
Did you notice that the first word use has a /s/ sound, while the second word use has a /z/ sound?
你有没有注意到第一个“use”中有一个/s/的音,而第二个“use”中有一个/z/的音?
In the first example, use is a noun.
第一个例子中,use是一个名词。
In the second example, use is a verb.
第二个例子中,use是一个动词。
The difference between use and use is one example of how speakers of American English sometimes pronounce nouns and verbs differently, even if they are spell the same.
“use”和“use”就是美式英语中名词和动词发音不同的例子,即使它们的拼写是一样的,发音也是不同的。
Now there are many words where this is not the case.
现在有很多词都是这样发音不同的情况。
But it's important to know the exceptions.
了解例外情况很重要。
What are some of these exceptions?
特例都有哪些呢?
house -- house ; excuse -- excuse.
让……居住——房子;原谅,宽恕——借口
In both cases, the noun form has the /s/ sound while the verb form has the /z/ sound.
在这两种情况下,名词形式都有/s/的音,而动词形式有/z/的音。
So you might hear someone say: I bought a new house.
所以你可能会听到有人说:我买了一栋新房子。
Or the museum houses many beautiful pieces of art.
或者这个博物馆收藏了许多美丽的艺术品。
The good news is that if you mix up the /s/ or /z/ sound, your message will still probably be understood.
好消息是,如果你混淆了/s/ 或 /z/的发音,你的信息可能仍然会被理解。
But if you want to sound more like a native speaker, it's important to learn the words that are pronounced differently in noun and verb form.
但是,如果你想听起来更像一个母语人士,学习名词和动词的不同发音是很重要的。
That's all for today.
以上就是今天的全部内容。
Keep up the good work.
继续加油吧。
