Amid fears over shortage of global grain output, an agriculture expert believes that China has the ability to deal with the international price hike, and ensure its domestic supply.
Dr. Li Ninghui is a researcher from the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences. He says he has disproved that China is the main cause of the international crisis.
Recently, people have said China's hefty imports have caused the price rise in the international grain market. The expert said this is untrue.
"China only takes up a very small portion of the international grain import and export trade. Our production has kept rising due to advances in technology. We maintain a basic balance between supply and demand. We import some grain mainly to adjust product structure. In general, the Chinese can produce enough to support themselves."
Last year, China's total grain output surpassed 500 billion kilograms. Total grain output has continued to increase in the past four years, and China has been a net exporter of wheat, corn and rice for two years now.
Li said the international grain price rise has only a limited impact on China, and the government has already carried out a series of measures to encourage production so that the supply will remain stable this year.
