A fourteen-year-old high school student from central China's Hubei Province committed suicide after she was blamed by her head-teacher for reading extracurricular books in class.
An article in the China Youth Daily reports that the second grader was regarded as a prodigy by her fellow students and the media for her extraordinary talent. By skipping grades for several times, she became the role model for many of her age. And as a result of that, her parents and teachers held high expectations for her. The girl tried her best to live up to these expectations. However, she felt stressful under the pressure, which, some people believe, led to her suicide.
In regard to this tragedy, the newspaper calls on schools and society at large to pay more attention to the minors' psychological welfare. It says parents should not only care about their children's academic performance, but they should also be ready to communicate with them and even provide counselling when they are in need.
The article concludes that teachers and parents should be cautious about the minors' potential mental problems. And the society should create a more favourable environment for their overall development.
