Chinese President Hu Jintao has called for earthquake relief efforts to be stepped up, as he said rescue work had entered its "most crucial phase".
After fllying into Mianyang, one of the worst-hit cities for discussions with other top relief officials including premier Wen Jiabao, the Chinese President then rushed to Beichuan County by automobile, where he told the earthquake victims that the government would make every possible effort to rebuild their homes.
"The earthquake has destroyed your homeland. We feel the same pain as you do. We will rescue all the people trapped by the earthquake. We will also heal all those who are injured. Our next goal is to get everyone back to work and to rebuild your homes."
The Chinese president also visited the troops and medical workers engaged in around-the-clock relief efforts in the earthquake stricken areas, telling them that their deeds would be remembered forever.
"You have brought hope to the people affected by the earthquake with your concrete action. Now we are facing a critical moment in the relief efforts. There are still many people trapped and awaiting our rescue. Time is running out, we must fight against every second to save lives and try to minimize the losses brought about by the disaster."
