China says it will stick to a sustainable energy strategy and actively safeguard energy security in the world. Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping made the remarks at the International Energy Conference held in the western Saudi port city of Jeddah. CRI's Dan Dan has the details.

Addressing leaders and ministers from 36 nations in the energy summit in Saudi Arabia, Xi Jinping says China will put emphasis on both energy exploitation and conservation.

The Chinese vice president has also called for concerted efforts from all sides to maintain a balanced supply and demand of the world energy.

"The energy issue is a global issue. Promoting a balanced supply and demand of world energy and safeguarding energy security is an urgent task of all countries today. To solve this problem requires the joint efforts from the international community including both oil producing and consuming nations."

Xi Jinping says China will try to meet the demands for economic growth and the improvement of people's life by increasing domestic energy supply.

But at the same time, he says the country has set its target to economize energy consumption to the most extent.

"China has drafted a plan to reduce the energy consumption in per unit gross domestic product by about 20 percent by 2010 from the 2005 level. We'll take all possible measures to achieve the goal."

Xi Jinping adds that China will pursue diversified development of energy supplies.

The country will enhance its ability of innovation, break through the bottlenecks of energy technology and seek new ways to exploit energy resources.
