Have you ever been confused by the verbs "raise" and "rise"?

你是不是也搞混过“raise”和“rise”?

Both words mean "to move upward." They also sound similar. But we don't use them in the same way.

这两个单词都是“上升”的含义,发音也很类似,但是用法可大不同。

Adriana from Uruguay says:

来自乌拉圭的Adriana说:

I would like to know the difference in meaning between "raise" and "rise" and when to use one or the other.

我想知道“raise”和“rise”含义有什么不同,什么时候用哪个单词。

I asked this question to a U.S. citizen and she could not tell me the answer.

我问了一个美国人,她也说不上来答案。

Hello Adriana and thanks for writing to us!

你好Adriana,谢谢你的评论!

That is a great question and something many English learners wonder about.

这是一个很好的问题,也是许多英语学习者想知道的。

The short answer is that "raise" is a transitive verb and "rise" is intransitive.

简单来说,“raise”是及物动词,“rise”是不及物动词。

I'll tell you what that means in a moment.

稍后我会告诉你是什么意思。

But, as you saw, many native English speakers might not be able to describe that difference.

但是正如你所看到的,许多以英语为母语的人可能也无法描述这种差异。

I suspect the same is true for you in Spanish – the right words just come at the right time, perhaps without you knowing the technical reason.

我想在西班牙语里面也是这样,知道在什么时候用什么单词,但是并不知道为什么这样用。

To answer your question more fully, let me begin by giving you the dictionary meanings of each verb:

为了更完整地回答你的问题,我先跟你介绍一下字典中的含义:

To raise means to lift or move something or someone upward. It also means to increase.

“raise”意思是举起或移动某物或某人。它还意味着增加。

To rise means to move upward or to increase.

“rise”意思是向上移动或增加。

Notice that "raise" includes the words "something" and "someone."

注意“raise”包括某物或某人。

That's the big difference between the two.

这就是两者最大的不同。

With "raise," something is causing the upward movement of something else, whereas with "rise," the cause is not stated.

“raise”表示某物引起另一物的上升运动,而“上升”的原因是没有提到的。

"Raise" is a transitive verb, which means it takes a direct object.

“raise”是及物动词,意味着后面可以直接跟宾语。

A direct object is a person or thing that receives the action of the verb.

直接宾语是接受动词动作的人或物。

Here is an example: Adriana raised her hand when she had a question.

例如:Adriana有问题时举起了手。

Here, the subject (Adriana) is causing the object (her hand) to move upward.

这里主语是Adriana引发了某物(她的手)举起来。

Here's another example: The restaurant raised dinner prices for Valentine's Day.

再比如:这家餐馆提高了情人节晚餐的价格。

The subject (the restaurant) is causing the object (dinner prices) to increase.

主语是餐馆引发了某物(晚餐价格)上涨。

On the other hand, "rise" is intransitive. It is never followed by a direct object.

而“rise”是不及物动词,后面不能直接跟宾语。

Here's an example: Warm air rises.

例如:热空气上升。

Here's another example: Swedish stocks rose after the election Monday.

再比如:瑞典股市周一大选后上涨。

Looking at this example, we can see there is a cause for the rise of stocks, but we do not directly state it in the subject-verb-object way we do with "raise."

看这个例子我们可以看到句子中有引发股市大涨的原因,但是并没有像“raise”那样用主谓宾的形式表达。

Notice that the past tense of "rise" is "rose." That's because the verb is irregular: rise, rose, risen.

注意“rise”的过去式是“rose”。是因为它是不规则动词:rise,rose,risen。

But, "raise" is regular: raise, raised, raised.

但是“raise”是规则的:raise,raised,raised。
