I am a psychology major from a second-class university. I’m not interested in my major, and I plan to apply for a position in a hotel during my last year of college. I want to be a hotel manager one day, but realize I have to work my way up from the bottom, working as a waiter first. I enjoy learning English, and believe my English language skills will help me with my hotel management career. When I told my classmates about my dream, they thought I had no ambition and only wanted to be a waiter. Now I feel a little confused about my future. Could you give me some advice?

I think there’s nothing wrong starting from the lowest rung of the ladder, especially if you clearly know how to climb it. As the economy isn’t very good at the moment, it’s better to be realistic and down to earth. Actually from the money perspective, being a blue-collar worker isn’t a bad choice at the moment, with the average entry level salary for white-collar jobs dropping to 800 yuan this year. So don’t feel ashamed or hesitant about your decision. Only you know what you really want to do.
