Alan: Are you familiar with theatre of the Absurd?

James: It's a school of the 1950s. Why do you ask?
詹姆：是20世纪50年代的一个流派。怎么了？
Alan: I went to see Waiting for Godot last night. The play is, how to say, funny in many places, but the overall story makes people sad. And nothing much seems to have happened.
艾伦：我昨晚去看《等待戈多》了。怎么说呢，这部剧有很多地方很搞笑，但是整个故事却让人悲伤，而且最后好像什么都没发生。
James: People sometimes call plays like this "tragicomedy". There are many amusing scenes in Waiting for Godot, but the plot is circular, so the main characters are not really doing anything or going anywhere, which indicates a pessimistic attitude towards human existence.
詹姆：有时人们把这类剧也称为悲喜剧。《等待戈多》中搞笑的场景虽然多，整个剧情却是环形结构，因此主要人物实际上既做不成什么事也去不了哪里，这显示出对于人类存在的一种悲观态度。
Alan: Yes, and instead of being bored by it, I find it is fascinating, although the settings and costumes are also very simple.
艾伦：是的，我不但不觉得它无聊，反而觉得很吸引人，尽管场景和人物服装也十分简单。
James: That's because they are carefully arranged and express some basic human dilemma. Actually theatre of the Absurd is influenced by a philosophical trend called existentialism.
詹姆：那是因为这些东西是精心安排以表达人类某种根本困境的。实际上荒诞派戏剧受到了存在主义这一哲学思潮的影响。
