一.spend：n. 预算，花销 v. 花费，浪费，度过
【词义辨析】
cost, expend, spend, take, pay,
cost: 指花费时间、金钱、劳力等。其主语是物，而不能由人充当，也不用被动形式。
expend: 较正式用词，通常指为某一专门目的而花费大量金钱、时间或精力。
spend: 普通用词，与cost基本同义，但主语必须是人。
take: 普通用词，指需要占用空间、时间或精力等，其主语可以是人，也可以是一件事情。
pay: “付款、给……报酬”，它可作及物动词也可作不及物动词。pay常用于以下几种句型：①Sb．pay（s）sb．money意为“某人付款给另一个人或某人给另一个人多少报酬”。
He pays me fifty yuan a week．
他每周给我五十元的报酬。
②pay for sth．意为“付……款、给……报酬”。
He has paid for the meal．
他已付了那顿饭的钱。
③pay money for sth．意为“花多少钱买某物”。
My father paid 40 pounds for the desk．
我父亲花了40英磅买了这张书桌。

2.We spent many hours in a pleasant conversation.

二.appoint：v. 任命，委派，指定，约定
【词义辨析】
appoint, designate, assign, name, nominate,
appoint: 通常指不经过选择的官方委任。
designate: 书面用语，侧重当权者或机构的选拔或任命，有时含强行指定的意味。
assign: 常指给一群人或个人分配、分派、指派或委派任务。
name: 普通用词，着重任命的结果，而不是过程。
nominate: 通常指为某一公职选择候选人，并将其提交给有决定权的人作最后决定。
【例句用法】
1.As a top manager, he should appoint none but people on their merit.
作为一位总经理，他应该任人为贤。
2.The company decided to appoint a new treasurer.
公司决定任命一位新司库。
3.He wasn't there at the appointed time.
他没有在指定的时间在那里。
4.They appointed him chairman.
他们任命他为主席。
三.complain：vi. 抱怨，控诉，诉说
【词义辨析】
complain, grumble, murmur,
complain: 侧重因对处境不满、待遇不公或自己有痛苦等而向别人诉说、埋怨。
grumble: 指因对处境、待遇不满或其他个人因素而愤愤不平地向他人诉苦或自言自语。
murmur: 多指因不满某人或某事而背着人自言自语地发怨言。
【例句用法】
1.Stop grumbling! You've got nothing to complain about.
别抱怨了! 你没什麽可抱怨的。
2.You've got nothing to complain about.
你没什么可抱怨的。
3.Don't complain without good cause.
没有充分的理由就不要抱怨。
4.He is always complaining.
他总是在发牢骚。
5.The tourist complained that the room was too dirty.
游客抱怨说房间太脏了。
6.They complained bitterly about the injustice of the system.
他们愤恨地抱怨制度不公平。
