1. 短语精讲：

last market-day：上次赶集的日子
备注：market-day是复合词，有名词market和名词day构成，意思是“赶集的日子”。
a middle-aged man：中年男子
备注：middle-aged是复合词，由形容词middle和动词age的过去分词构成。
in the vale：在峡谷里
备注：如果是指地名的话，注意vale中的v要大写。
not walk in a straight line：走路东倒西歪
备注：in a straight line是在一条直线上的意思，那么走路不在一条直线上，形容这个人走路东倒西歪，走不稳。
an old and worn hat：破旧的帽子
备注：worn是wear的过去分词，做形容词用，修饰hat。
after a while：过一会儿，不久
备注：a wile是“一会儿”的意思，after a while意思即：过了一会儿，过了一下。
the man with the basket：挽着框子的人
备注：with是介词，在这里的意思为“拿着”，它表示一种伴随状况。with the basket是介词短语做定语，修饰man。

turn round：转身
Eg. He did not turn round a single time. 他的头一次也没有回转过。
