Life, it's just amazing.
生命很神奇！
Living things are all over our planet, on high mountaintops, in deserts and at the very bottom of the ocean.
生物遍布我们的星球，在高山顶上、在沙漠里或在海底都有它们的足迹。
Life is pretty much everywhere you can think of, from the North Pole to the South Pole.
你能想到的任何地方都有生物，从北极到南极。
And you know who really loves life? Scientists called biologists.
你知道什么人喜爱生物吗？称为生物学家的科学家。
That's because their job is to study living things.
这是因为他们的工作就是研究生物。
That's what the word biology really means, the study of life.
这是“biology”一词的真正含义，研究生物。
So a biologist is anyone who studies anything that's alive.
所以生物学家是研究任何生物的人。
What kinds of living things can you think of?
你能想到哪种生物？
There are plants and animals, of course. But what else?
当然有植物和动物。还有其他的吗？
What about fungi, like mushrooms in the woods and yeast in our kitchens
有真菌吗？比如木头里的蘑菇或厨房里的酵母，
or the yucky mold that grows on old bread?
或者是在旧面包上生长的恶心霉菌？
And what about living things that are too small to see with just our eyes,

like plankton in the rivers and oceans

or tiny bacteria that live everywhere from the soil to our own bodies.

The list of different living things on Earth is practically endless,
地球上不同的生物实际上是无穷无尽的，
and there are biologists who study every single one of them.
生物学家研究每一个分支。
Since there are so many types of living things,
因为生物的类型很多，
there are also many different kinds of jobs that biologists can do.
生物学家的工作也有很多种。
Some biologists might only studying one species of animal, plant.
一些生物学家可能只研究一种动植物。
For example, a biologist might study just three-toed sloth.
例如，一位生物学家可能只研究三趾树懒。
But there's a bunch of things that she might want to learn about them.
她可能会想了解关于它的一堆事。
She might study how tree sloths and jaguars live together in the same habitat
她可能研究树懒和美洲虎如何在同一个栖息地生活，
or how many plants a sloth has to eat every day to survive.
或一只树懒每天吃多少植物才能活。
She might try to learn how to keep three-toed sloths from going extinct
她可能想要了解如何防止三趾树懒灭亡，
or how to clean up the pollution that's spoiling a sloths home.
或如何清除树懒栖息地的污染。
A lot of the time, biologists do their jobs in the field or outside.
生物学家很多时候都在野外或室外工作。
They go right to where the things that they want to study live,
他们直接去想要研究的生物栖息地，
and they observe or watch them in the wild.
他们在野外观察它们。
That might mean working on a boat to study dolphins that live in the ocean
也就是说他们在船上研究海洋里的海豚，
or in a cave to learn all about the bats that make their homes.
或在洞穴里研究在此安家的蝙蝠。
Other biologists spend their days inside a laboratory using cool equipment to study living things.
有些生物学家在实验室内利用良好的仪器研究生物。
One of the most important tools that biologists use is a microscope.
生物学家使用的一个最重要仪器是显微镜。
Microscopes help biologists see things that are just too small to see with their eyes alone.
显微镜能帮助他们看到肉眼看不见的微小物体。
Microscopes work by magnifying or increasing the size of things so that the scientists can see them clearly.
显微镜能够放大物体的尺寸，这样科学家们就能清楚地看到它们了。
Biologists often use microscopes to study cells.
生物学家经常用显微镜研究细胞。
A cell is a part that makes up a living thing.
细胞是生物的组成部分。
Everything alive, including your own body is made of cells.

By studying cells, biologists have been able to make new medicines

and have learned how to prevent or cure diseases.

Then you need to be what all scientists are. Curious.

Biologist has lots of questions to find out more about the living things that share the Earth with us.

They might ask questions about what some things need to stay alive,
他们可能会问某些生物如何生存的问题，
like these colorful tube worms at the bottom of the ocean,

or they might ask how some living things like rays

are distantly related far back in time to other living things like sharks,

or they might try to learn more about animals behavior or how they act

like how bees live and work together to make a colony.

But that's not all, on top of studying things whether in the field or in the laboratory.

Biologists also need to be able to share what they find with other scientists,

and anyone else who's interested in living things, people like you and me.

That might mean writing about what they find or taking pictures

or teaching students in schools all about how fascinating living things are.

So there you have it, biologists or scientists who study any kind of living things.

They're scientists that are really into life.
