As more and more travellers spend their weekends and May Day holiday in ancient towns in the suburbs, new problems that need urgent attention from local authorities are cropping up.
An article in Shanghai-based Wen Hui Pao says ancient towns try to boost local tourism, but fail to provide related services. The paper says some drivers can't find parking lots or proper restaurants. Some even can't find the ancient towns themselves, due to a lack of road signs.
The article points out that tourists are also annoyed by price increases. Local snacks and some public toilets have doubled their prices during the travel season, infringing on consumers' rights and harming the reputation of these ancient towns.
As a growing number of towns seek development in the name of historical value, the article calls on local authorities to come up with regulations to properly develop local tourism.
