A special psychological support team arrived at Mianyang city in Sichuan province Wednesday, much to the surprise of local children who survived the earthquake. In the team were many familiar faces. Let's turn to our reporter Zhong Qiu to find out who they are.
Reporter:
These familiar faces are Olympic champions, including table tennis queen Deng Yaping, China's short-track speed-skating Olympic champion Yang Yang, chess champion Xie Jun and "Springboard Diving Queen" Gao Min.
As most sports facilities in Mianyang were damaged in the devastating earthquake, the Olympic champions came to deliver sports facilities to youngsters. Besides goods such as basketballs and volleyballs, they especially brought their encouragement to cheer children up.
Here is diving diva Gao Min, also a Sichuan native, talking to quake-affected children in Sichuan dialect.
"We, Olympic winners, have come here to cheer you up. We used to get strength from your encouragement when we were in the Olympic Games. As a Sichuan native, I am so proud of you!"
Together with her, the children shouted "surpass ourselves" three times.
"Surpass ourselves! Surpass ourselves! Surpass ourselves!"
Former Olympic table tennis champion Deng Yaping, who is also the ambassador of the Red Cross Society of China, said she brought with her the spirit of sports which could inspire and mobilize quake victims to get back on their feet quickly.
The sports champions are with 14 other members, most of whom are medical experts and psychologists from major medical institutions in Beijing. The team is expected to stay in Mianyang for 10 days.
