Tend：倾向表现为往往
　　Peope tend to suspect a pioneer.
　　对于提出新观念的人（说得好听点叫先行者pioneer），人们先倾向于怀疑。
　　也可以说：人们往往怀疑先行者。

　　一种“倾向”表现为“往往”干什么。
　　注：这可不是为举例而举例（not take an example for example’s sake），群众对权威的迷信（superstition for authority），常有碍于(tend to hold back)对新事物的接受。

　　YOS tends to challeng authority.
　　老鞋倾向于挑战权威。
　　老鞋总是挑战权威。
　　前者（the former）似乎还不如后者(the latter)自然。
　　My tendency to challenge authority is obvious.
　　我挑战权威的倾向是明显的。
　　大家可以看得出来。

　　值得一提的是trend，至少表面上看来是亲戚（apparently related at least）。长得像，意思也近。
　　It is a new international trend to challenge authority.
　　挑战权威是一种新的国际趋势。

　　注：显然（obviously），这个是只是举例而已，或者是为自我安慰（for the sake of self-comfort）。
　　不得不说intend。

　　当老鞋challenge authority的时候，不小心把要紧的人物给惹怒（irritate or enrage some VIP)，可能会说：
　　I didn't intend to offend you; I only meant to state the truth.

　　哈哈，俺不是有意要冒犯您；俺不过是想陈述一下事实。
　　对啊，intend to do跟mean to do差不多就是图谋或打算做某事。

　　字面上，in(里面/内心），tend(倾向），还好理解吧？
　　再到名词intention, 形容词intentional, 乃至副词intentionally, 看起来很酷，实际上也就简单了。

　　I did not have the intention to offend you.
　　我无意冒犯你。
　　My offensive remarks were by no means intentional.
　　我的言论若有冒犯，绝非故意。
　　I didn't make the remarks intentionally.
　　我有此言论，并非故意。
　　那看来还要收拾extend。
　　ex与in正好相反，所以动作方向也就反了。

　　比如领导跟老鞋强调道：
　　The negative influence of your remarks will extend farther and farther.
　　是说：你这厮言论的负面影响，将扩展得越来越深远。
　　扩展，当然是向外。
　　扩展到哪一步？那是个程度（extent)问题。
　　领导继续说：
　　The influence may develop to the extent that my position be threatened.
影响可能会发展到我的位置受到威胁的程度。
　　扩展的结果，是范围广大(extensive)。

　　领导总结陈词：
　　It does not take extensive knowledge to realize that the influence may really extend to such an extent.
　　认识到影响确实可能会扩展到如此程度，并不需要什么广博的知识。
　　微言大义，韵味绵长！
