Please pay attention to the phrase:used to do/be,If something used to happen, it happened regularly or all the time in the past, but does not happen now.过去常常做/发生
Its negative form is ‘usedn't’.
eg:I used to sleep in English class when I was in junior high school.上初中时，我常常在英语课上睡觉。
We used to be good friends,but fell apart about a year ago.我们过去曾经是好朋友，但一年前关系破裂了。
The word flush here：If you flush a toilet,or if it flushes,you make water go through it to clean it.It can also refer to becoming red in the face.冲洗；脸红
eg:Water flushed through the pipes.水从管子奔流而过。
She began to flush with excitement.她由于激动脸开始发红。

2.I just locked the door and pulled the chain,flushed my evil spirits down the drain.我会关上门撇上门链然后把我邪恶的一面冲下下水道。
Here,‘spirit’used as a countable noun,has the same meaning as the word soul does.灵魂
eg:Although she's dead,I can feel her spirit with me.尽管她已经去世了，我仍然能感觉到她的灵魂跟我在一起。
Spirits with the letter ‘s’in it can refer to the way someone feels at a particular time,for example,if they are cheerful or sad,we can say they are in ‘good/low spirits’.心情，心境；情绪（好心情/坏心情）
drain refers to the pipe that carries water or waste liquids away.下水道，排水管；

drifter,stemmed from drift,is a wanderer who has no established residence or visible means of support.流浪者

afloat:meaning being aimlessly drifting or floating,can be used as an adverb and an adjective.飘浮的；浸满水的
eg:Please just satisfy our curiosity about how ants cooperate to stay afloat.能不能只是满足一下我们对于火蚁如何协作保持漂浮的好奇心呢？
