Record-high temperatures scorch Xinjiang
罕见高温席卷新疆
It's baking in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Record-breaking temperatures are expected in the next two days.
A heat wave has been scorching the region in the past week, with the highest-level heat alert for five days. Temperatures in most areas climbed above 35 degrees Celsius.
On Monday, the mercury hit 46 degrees in the region's city of Turpan. Meteorologists attribute the unusual heat to strong subtropical high pressure. People have been warned to suspend outdoor work.
