On the sidelines of the G20 summit, UK and German leaders have held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, to discuss the Syria crisis and ISIL threat.
UK prime minister David Cameron and Putin met Monday. The two leaders condemned Friday's terror attacks in Paris, and vowed to work together to defeat the surge of terrorism. Cameron says differences between the two over the future of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad appear to be narrowing.
Also on Monday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Putin discussed a roadmap for peace in Syria. Merkel said the group of 20 leading economies should stand united to face any militant threat. She also promised to help France hunt down the perpetrators of the Paris attacks. Both Cameron and Merkel held a press conference.
"This morning I held talks with President Putin, and I urged him to work with the international community to support a transition in Syria away from President Assad and his ruthless brutality. We need to find a way to work together to bring this fighting to an end and focus on the aim we all share: distorting the evil death-cult which is ISIL," said David Cameron, UK PM.
"We agreed that the challenge of extremism can't just be tackled with military means, but only a multitude of measures, including an intensive cooperation of intelligence. services, but also comprehensive international cooperation and surveillance of internet communication. We also need to stop the money flows of the terrorists, and to limit all illegal activities as far as possible," said Angela Merkel, German chancellor.
