Ladies and gentlemen, Elle Woods.

On our very first day at Harvard... a very wise professor quoted Aristotle.
''The law is reason free from passion.''
Well, no offense to Aristotle...
but in my three years at Harvard... l have come to find that passion is a key ingredient...
to the study and practice of law and of life.
lt is with passion, courage of conviction... and strong sense of self...
that we take our next steps into the world...
remembering that first impressions... are not always correct...
you must always have faith in people...
and most importantly...
you must always have faith in yourself.
Congratulations, Class of 2004.

Elle敬重的Strong Well教授为他们主持了毕业典礼，在介绍Elle的时候，教授说到 “I am personally very honored to introduce this year's class-elected speaker.”，这里be honored to是主持会议，演出等集会时，介绍嘉宾最常用的表达法。中文翻译为“非常荣幸得……”，后面可以接introduce, present等动词。 类似的表达法还有很多，比如：Allow me to introduce…允许我介绍一下……。

Elle的开场白引用了亚里士多德的一句话 ''The law is reason free from passion.'' 这里要注意的是，reason已经不是我们常说的那个“原因”了，而是“理智, 理性”。比如：Once your brain cools down , your powers of reason return . 一旦你的头脑冷静下来，理智的力量就会回复。 另外，我们常常说的形容词“通情达理的，有理智的，讲道理的”就是用以reason为词根的reasonable来表达的。下次，如果有人胡闹，不讲理，你可以对他说， “Be reasonable,please” 摆脱，讲点道理好不好。

这一句中的free也不是“自由的”或者 “免费的”意思了。Be free from 是一个固定搭配，表示“不受……影响的；没有……的”。比如：A judge must be free from prejudice.

法官必须不抱成见。She had the good fortune to be free from illness. 她运气好，没有得病。

经历了自我否定后重新找回自信的Elle认为，passion是自己生活学习中的key ingredient。Key作“钥匙”“答案”讲的用法大家都很熟悉了。但在本段对话中，key意思是“重要的,基本的,关键的”，是一个形容词。比如，在下面这个例子中：Self-confidence is the key factor in any successful career. 自信是任何成功之道的关键因素。 恩，这个句子中的factor“因素，要素”，就相当于电影中的，ingredient。 Ingredient除了做“因素”“成分”讲外，还可以指“（烹调的)原料”， 比如： What are the ingredients of the cake? 蛋糕用哪些原料做的？

除了passion, courage of conviction. and strong sense of self激情，敢于坚持的勇气以及对自我的认可之外，Elle格外强调了一点，We must always have faith in ourselves. have faith in“对……有信念，信任，相信”。比如：One must have faith in the future . 一个人一定要对未来有信念。We all have faith in the people we encounter during our early youth . 我们所有人对于在自己早期青年时期遇见的人抱有信念。

发言的最后，Elle恢复自己阳光可爱的一面，用We did it结束了自己的发言。We did it.是英美人非常喜欢用的一句口语表达法。意思为“我们做到了，我们成功了！”再比如：It was a game to win, we did it. 这是我们应该赢得的比赛，我们做到了。Our designs were approved . Production is gearing up. We did it. 我们的设计被批准了正要投入生产，我们成功了！
