What animal do you think kills the most people every year?

Sharks? Lions? Other humans? Nope. Mosquitos.

While some of the more stereotypical killers kill a few dozen or less people,

mosquitos are responsible for over seven hundred thousand deaths per year.

According to Bill Gates, mosquitos also cause billions of dollars in lost productivity

and are found on every continent but Antarctica.

Usually their bite is just annoying,

At any moment in time, there are over two hundred million people suffering from these illnesses worldwide.

It gets even scarier when you realize that these pests outnumber every other animal besides termites and ants during breeding seasons!

It's no wonder that Brazil's government is trying to squash their population of mosquitoes.

With the world cup just a few weeks away,

scientists are releasing genetically engineered mosquitoes programmed to wipe out their own species.

When the males reproduce, their destructive gene is passed along and kills the offspring before they reach adulthood.

So far so good, according to scientists ninety percent of that species of mosquitos are now infected with the gene.

But there's a catch. There are over two thousand species of mosquitos,

many of which carry fatal diseases, however this gene targets only one.
