Welcome to one of the most glorious parks in Beijing, if not the world, China's National Botanical Garden!

The park was first established in 1956 and has come a long way since then.

In April 2022, it was expanded and integrated into the Institute of Botany of the Chinese Academy of Sciences to become China's First National Botanical garden.

More than just somewhere to go for a relaxing weekend outing, it is also an institution with serious scientific missions and also a place with a rich and unique history.

This huge greenhouse is a must-see in the park.

It is a haven for rare and endangered plants from far and wide.

A number of specimens of the plant titan arum flower here are attracting a lot of visitors.

It is an endangered species from Sumatra, and its gigantic flowers only bloom for 48 hours.

A short walk from the greenhouse will bring you to the Cao Xueqin Memorial Hall.

Cao was a celebrated writer of the Qing Dynasty.

His master work, The Dream of the Red Chamber, is one of the China's four great classical novels, and is known for its multitude of characters, complex plots, and vivid descriptions.

His writing was a great contribution to not only Chinese culture, but also world literature.

And this is where he used to live.

Another famous attraction in the park is the Wofo Temple, which was originally built in the Tang Dynasty.

“Wofo” in Chinese means “reclining Buddha”.

In those days it housed a reclining Buddha carved out of sandalwood, which in the Yuan Dynasty, was replaced by a huge bronze Shakyamuni Buddha in Nirvana.

Explore a little deeper and you will come to the crown jewel of the park, Cherry Vale or Yingtaogou.

In this area of the gardens, a stream slowly flows between two hillocks.

In the Ming Dynasty, cherry trees were planted on both sides of the stream, and that's how cherry vale got its name.

The cherry trees today are not the same as they were then, but the name of the place has been passed down.

Strolling through on a wooden boardwalk, visitors will be surrounded by some very old tree species including the Chinese redwood, metasequoia, a conifer that has existed for more than 100 million years.

People love to walk out here to enjoy the cool breeze and the beautiful view all year round.

China's National Botanical Garden is a place where nature, science all come together, giving the people in the city an urban oasis; a calm change of scenery when they get tired of the concrete jungle.
