写作语库:tough one’s shoulder:拍某人的肩膀

语法点拨:some time later意思是“过了一会儿”,由于是用在过去时中,所以用later。不要用after some time,这个是用于将来时中。

2. A magistrate was a judge who dealt with small crimes in local courts, and the magistrate for this district was well known.

写作语库:deal with:处理 in local courts:在当地法庭 be well known:闻名的,出名的,有名气的

e.g. We have to be prepared to deal with a range of possible cases. 我们必须准备应付各种可能的情况。

e.g. A decisive person is needed to deal with the situation. 应付这一局面需要一个坚决果断的人。

语法点拨:who dealt with small crimes in local courts是先行性定语从句修饰指代人且在定语从句中做主语的先行词judge,关系代词who不可省略。

3. His name was Mr Fang and he was a disagreeable, bad-tempered man.

词汇精讲1:disagreeable是形容词,意思是“不为人喜欢的,讨厌的”。例如:

My wife was disagreeable to me this morning. 今天早上我太太对我发脾气。

Some fruits are disagreeable to the taste. 有几种果子味道不好。

词汇精讲2:bad-temper是复合形容词,源于名词性短语bad temper,这个名词性短语与动词have连用表示“脾气差,爱发脾气”。例如:

She used to have a rather bad temper. 她过去脾气相当坏。

词汇窜烧:frown:vi. 皱眉头 sharply: adv. 严厉地,尖锐地

加分短语:frown at somebody:对某人皱眉头

e.g. Don't frown at me like that. Anything you don't understand? 不要那样对着我皱眉。你有什么不明白的吗?

加分短语:charge somebody with something:因某事而指控某人

e.g. He was charged with murder. 他被控犯谋杀罪。

e.g. She charged me with neglecting my duty. 她指控我玩忽职守。

7. The magistrate looked at Mr Brown low from head to foot.

加分短语:from head to foot:从上到下,全身地,从头至脚

e..g. A passing lorry covered us in mud from head to foot. 一辆驰过的卡车溅了我们一身泥。

e..g. They crowded around him, eyeing him from head to foot with great curiosity. 他围住他,好奇地从头到脚打量着他。
